Medicaid should be automatically available to unaccompanied homeless youth and pregnant or parenting youth, and housing should be connected to their service packages.

Many families could be prevented from becoming homeless if agencies could provide rental assistance or short-term subsidies to those who are not in "prioritized literally homeless" living situations (doubled- or tripled-up with family or friends, living in a single motel room with parent(s) and children, etc.).

Include the best practices of ALL SYSTEMS working with homeless populations. Housing is not the only system with practices that impact the housing stability of individuals, families or youth. We need to use all the tools in our toolbox!

This data issue could be addressed by improving data sharing and coordination with public school systems. Every public school district is required to have a Homeless Liaison to identify and serve homeless children and youth, whether or not they are funded by the competitive homeless education grants from USED. If we connect the systems we already have in place NOW befor our focus inthis campaign turns to ending family & youth homelessness, we will increases our chances of success.

Once again, I note that schools and public education are missing from the comments about improving our data on homeless youth... There are a significant number of unaccompanied homeless youth UNDER THE AGE OF 18 that are not runaways, but ARE enrolled in schools and couch-surfing among friends and relatives (as well as strangers... ). IF WE ARE TO SERVE THIS POPULATION, WE NEED TO COORDINATE DATA AND SERVICES WITH PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

HMIS and public schools need to find a way to integrate data on families and children/youth BEFORE we can address ending family and youth homelessness. If the data systems are not integrated, we may never know how effective our efforts are. Simply adding a few questions to the HMIS intake form - regarding information on the children of preschool age and school age - and sharing that with public school homeless liaisons could bring together both systems to coordinate services to those families and children/youth.

Please include the public schools' data systems in this integration! Due to the privacy of school records, community agencies and schools cannot easily share information and data on those we both serve. Including a few additional questions on the HMIS intake form (about children of preschool and school age) could be a major step toward coordination of services.

YES!! While we have made impact on chronic homelessness, we are seeing family homelessness increase, and need to address this NOW by beginning to utilize funds to provide housing supports to those that are not prioritized for housing assistance, but are living in dangerous/risky conditions and situations. In particular, unaccompanied youth (NOT JUST THOSE OVER 18 YRS OLD) need to be sheltered and provided with a Host Home option.

I support Sparky's observations about youth needs. We also need to consider youth for whom family reunification is NOT a possibility. Educational connections and continuity are essential for all youth, but these in particular need additional support and supervision. We need strategies and tips for strong collaboration between MV housing and education programs in all communities.
